GRAND PARADE. BRIGHTON

A political rally walking down Grand Parade towards Brighton Seafront. In the background you can see the old Richmond Pub (a popular music venue).

This picture is thought to be a march led by political activist & MP Bessie Bradock who was part of the Co-operative party movement.

Bessie is well known because of an exchange with Winston Churchill in the Commons, which went like this.

"Bessie Braddock MP: “Winston, you are drunk, and what’s more you are disgustingly drunk.”

WSC: “Bessie, my dear, you are ugly, and what’s more, you are disgustingly ugly. But tomorrow. I shall be sober and you will still be disgustingly ugly.”
