Rottingdean High Street (sea end)
This picture of a Policeman directing traffic was taken at the junction of the A259 at the crossroads of The High Street in Rottingdean in 1938.
The car is a 1930s Singer Junior.
In September 1933, Brighton Police became the first force to have police radios and it was at this time that white helmets were adopted, only to be suspended in wartime.
They were brought back briefly between 1952 and 1967.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, Rottingdean was a smugglers' village.
