Plate 60: 1938 Rottingdean High Street (sea end)

In September 1933, Brighton Police became the first force to have police radios. It was at this time that white helmets were adopted, only to be suspended in wartime.

They were brought back briefly between 1952 and 1967.

In this picture a policeman can be seen directing traffic at the crossroads of The High Street in Rottingdean in 1938.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, Rottingdean was a smugglers' village.
