Plate 6: 1936

ROBERT STREET, BRIGHTON

The Evening Argus was published at Robert Street, Brighton.

Paper was delivered daily to satisfy print runs which were often over 100,000.

It seems unthinkable that paper could be delivered on a lorry in this way, with only gravity and some well placed wooden blocks to keep it in place.

In 1936, just before the outbreak of war, paginations were often only 48 pages and would be reduced further as newsprint became scarce during the 'war years'.

Robert Street still has not changed much, but the Evening Argus building has been converted to flats called 'Argus Lofts'.
